CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

WHEN I AM alone, I think about what I’ve been told. Even more, the information he has given me—or maybe nearly given me—dominates every aspect of the situation. He’d had a lot to drink, it was true. But I did not get the sense that he was beyond himself. The booze he had consumed might have lightened his load of responsibility, but it did not relieve him of it. I was certain he had known what he was saying. So the question remains: why? Was what he had told me a given within the company? That things weren’t happening quite as they should be? Were these the things those working in the lab were seeing and feeling? Or did he have additional information and was wanting to send an alert further afield? Or was everything he was feeling pure sour grapes? I had no way of knowing.

Also, I had sensed that he was frightened, though I don’t know of what. In fairness, he had seemed frightened of everything. I think again about those red ears. But was he exhibiting fright beyond shyness? I can’t be sure.

When I think about it, though, what, really, had he said? Pulled apart and stripped to bare essentials, it had seemed to me at the time that he was implying that the core technology on which Greenmüll’s unicorn financing had been based might not work. That was huge. As well, it changed the picture and confirmed what I’d learned from Curtis. The danger to Virginia may not be a rival company wanting to take Greenmüll down, which was the theory I had been leaning toward before this day. But possibly it was someone with a vested interest in covering up the fact that Martin’s technology was further away from fruition, and therefore revenue, than what had previously been thought. Not ready for primetime. And who would have the most to lose if that were the case? It seemed to me to be ever more clear: the one I needed to be watching most closely was Evan Hollingsworth.
